Tastes and Sounds of the Town Raises Funds and Awareness

Over 200 people enjoyed the 4th Annual “Tastes & Sounds of the Town” fund raising event for Friends in Action of the Eastern Panhandle, an evening of fine dining and lively music at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center on Saturday, September 11th.  Seventeen restaurants offered samplings of their signature dishes in an appetizing competition to win the coveted “Best Table Display” and “Best Dish” awards.  Tari’s Café from Berkeley Springs was the recipient for the “Best Table Display” award, providing a taste of spicy chipotle crab bisque, shrimp ceviche shooters, and pomegranate mojito granitas.  The Bavarian Inn claimed the “Best Dish” award serving samplings of their signature menu items including wild boar.

Other restaurants in the competition included:  The Tuscany Grille, The Rumsey Tavern, The Press Room, Yellow Brick Bank, Panorama at the Peak, Stone Soup Bistro, Hillbrook Inn, Mellow Moods, Shepherd University Dining Services, Skippers Downtown Dips and Deli, Hypnocoffee Roastery, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, Dish, the Shepherdstown Sweet Shop Bakery, and Cress Creek Country Club

Several talented local musicians provided entertainment during the evening.  The Pat Lowry Combo provided background music while guests arrived.  Musician Todd Coyle and band The Rolling Coyotes entertained guests as they enjoyed their dinner.

A lively auction with auctioneer Jim Edwards brought people to their feet as bidders went back and forth, trying to win items such as a mural by artist Ronald Layman, Disney Hopper Day Passes, a weekend stay at a beautiful Log-Cabin at Deep Creek Lake donated by Sheila Evers, and a weekend V.I.P. Passport Package to Massanutten Resort donated by PaPa John’s Pizza.

A silent auction with over 50 items donated by supporters of the program caught the attention of attendees, featuring original artwork by artists of Jefferson County including Pat Barnes, Dennis Crosby, Denny Clarke, David Hutchins, and Nancy Kautz.  Bidding was fierce for some of the beautiful artwork and the gift certificates donated by local merchants including River Riders, Shanti Saagar Yoga, Social Graces Ballroom Dance Studio, Heaven’s Hands Massage Therapist, and gift certificates for fine dining.

All proceeds from the evening benefit the mentoring program of Friends in Action of the Eastern Panhandle, serving low income families throughout Jefferson and Berkeley Counties.  One graduate of the program, now attending Shepherd University, volunteered her time at the event.  “Friends in Action helped my family become self-sufficient and I want to make sure that other families can receive the kind of support we received,” said Bethany Baddorf.

Sponsors for the event included:  Larry and Geri Crawley-Woods, Shepherd University, Guy’s Buick-Pontiac, City National Bank, Prettyman Broadcasting, Jefferson Security Bank, Jones Insurance Agency, United Bank, Eden Design, Skinner Law Firm, Virginia State UAW CAP Council, Pill & Pill, PLLC., Reed’s Pharmacy, Mountain State University, and Martin & Seibert.
